Clear bra or PPF – are they even different anymore?

I’ve been going down this rabbit hole of paint protection for my classic car and I keep hearing these two terms thrown around interchangeably – clear bra and paint protection film – and honestly I’m starting to wonder if there’s actually any real difference between them or if it’s just marketing jargon that detailers use to sound more sophisticated. From what I’ve been able to piece together, it seems like clear bra was the older generation of film that was basically just a thick vinyl layer meant to stop stone chips, but it didn’t have any of the self-healing properties or UV resistance that modern PPF has, so it would turn yellow and become brittle after a few years in the sun. The newer paint protection films are apparently completely different technology, made from multi-layered thermoplastic urethane that can actually stretch and conform to complex curves without lifting, plus they have that clever elastomeric topcoat that lets minor scratches disappear when the film gets warm. I’ve also seen some people using the term clear bra specifically for just the front-end coverage, whereas PPF can refer to anything from partial to full body wraps, which only adds to the confusion. I found a piece online that explains Clear bra versus PPF understanding the difference before you decide, which was useful for clearing up some of the terminology, but I’d still like to hear from people who’ve actually had experience with both older and newer films. Has anyone here had a clear bra installed years ago and then upgraded to modern PPF, and can tell me whether the difference is as dramatic as the marketing claims make it out to be? I’m particularly keen to know whether the self-healing properties actually work in practice or if they’re mostly just a gimmick that sounds impressive but doesn’t really make a difference in day-to-day use. Any honest feedback from people who’ve lived with both options would be massively helpful before I make a decision.
