Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso – October 10, 2025: Burkina Faso has notably rejected a proposal from the Trump administration to accept deportees from the United States. Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré described the American offer as “indecent” and fundamentally at odds with the country’s values of dignity. This defiance occurred just hours before the U.S. Embassy in Ouagadougou halted most visa services for Burkinabé citizens, directing applications to its embassy in neighboring Togo.
This standoff underscores escalating tensions, as the Trump administration has sent over 40 deportees to Africa since July through largely undisclosed agreements with at least five African nations. Burkina Faso’s refusal stands in stark contrast to documented deals already made by Rwanda ($7.5 million for up to 250 deportees), Eswatini ($5.1 million for up to 160 deportees), as well as agreements with Ghana, South Sudan, and Uganda.
